Marc Cucurella has completed a high-profile transfer to Real Madrid from Chelsea, a move confirmed just hours before Spain’s opening fixture at the World Cup. The deal, valued at £47.5 million plus an additional £4.3 million in add-ons, sees the 27-year-old defender return to La Liga, but to a club that stands as the fierce rival of his boyhood team, Barcelona.
A swift Madrid move
The transfer brings an end to Cucurella’s two-year spell at Chelsea, where he made 163 appearances between 2022 and 2026. Prior to his move to the Spanish capital, the versatile defender had been linked with several top European clubs, including Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and a potential return to Barcelona.
The signing process for Real Madrid was remarkably quick, with Cucurella himself noting it took “a day and a half or two.” This efficiency allowed him to finalise his future swiftly before fully concentrating on national team duties. According to El Mundo, José Mourinho played a direct role in convincing Cucurella to join, while Spanish publication COPE reported that Mourinho was “crazy” to secure his signature, even calling him after the contract was signed.
“Yes, totally. I think everything was done in a day and a half or two,” Cucurella told El Mundo. “For me, much better, much faster, without headaches. In the end, it’s already closed and very happy. Happy for my signing and especially also to be able to focus on the national team, on the World Cup, which I think is a unique thing and deserves it.”

Barcelona’s missed opportunity
Cucurella’s decision to join Real Madrid is particularly noteworthy given his deep ties to Barcelona. He spent eight formative years in Barcelona’s youth system, from 2012 to 2020, fostering a strong connection to the Catalan club. In March, Cucurella publicly admitted it would be “hard to turn down” an offer to return to Barcelona if one were to materialise. COPE had even reported that Cucurella had initially prioritised a return to Barcelona.
However, a move back to Camp Nou ultimately proved unrealistic. Barcelona’s current situation in the transfer market, particularly their focus on signing a new forward, meant they were unable to pursue Cucurella, leaving the door open for their El Clásico rivals.
Addressing the move to Real Madrid despite his past, Cucurella offered a philosophical perspective. “I tell them that life has different stages,” he explained to El Mundo in his first interview as a Madrid player. “In this case, I’ve had to make an important decision, and I have no doubts; I think it’s a big step for me. When you’re a kid, you dream of playing for big teams, and I think Real Madrid is one of them.” He further expressed his excitement to be part of the club’s “mystique” and its legendary Champions League history, hoping to “win titles with them and have a wonderful time there.”
