Neymar closer to full return

Brazil may be able to call on Neymar for more than a late cameo when they face Japan in the World Cup round of 32 on Monday.

The 34-year-old forward has been working his way back from a calf injury and returned to the national team in Brazil’s 3-0 win over Scotland, where he played a little over 15 minutes. It was a carefully managed comeback after a long spell away from the Seleção.

According to Reuters, via The Daily Star, Carlo Ancelotti told reporters on Sunday: “In the last week his progress has been significant. Unfortunately he could not play longer than 15 minutes before, but he is now doing well enough to play more.”

That update gives Brazil another attacking option at a decisive point in the tournament. Neymar is unlikely to be thrown straight back into a full workload, but Ancelotti’s comments suggest the forward could have a more meaningful role than he did against Scotland.

Japan test carries real danger

Brazil’s meeting with Japan will be played in Houston, with kick-off at noon local time, 19:00 in Denmark. It is a knockout match, and Ancelotti made clear that Brazil are preparing for a difficult evening.

Japan beat Brazil 3-2 in a friendly in Tokyo in October, a result Ancelotti said had given him a clear idea of the challenge his side now face. “It was a good experience to know that Japan are one of the best teams in the world,” he said. “We have full respect for them and will prepare for the game like it is a final, because to us it is a final.”

The Brazil coach also warned that the match could demand patience and composure. “We need a strong mind and strong hearts. We have to be ready for anything that could take place in a knockout match, such as extra-time or penalties,” Ancelotti said.

Brazil keep their focus

Neymar’s return has naturally drawn attention, but Ancelotti has tried to keep the wider focus on Brazil’s collective performance. His side topped their group and arrive in the knockout stage with confidence, but the coach insisted the tournament remains open.

“The team is ready, motivated and confident. But every match in this competition is very difficult,” he said.

For Neymar, the Japan match could mark another important step in a comeback that has been watched closely in Brazil. For Ancelotti, the task is simpler: manage the minutes, protect the player and keep Brazil moving.
