Didier Deschamps has delivered a firm defence of Kylian Mbappé after France’s tense World Cup win over Paraguay.

The France captain scored the only goal of the last-16 tie, converting a second-half penalty to send Les Bleus into the quarter-finals. But after the match, Deschamps was not only asked about the result.

He was also asked about the online image of Mbappé as an authoritarian figure within the team.

According to The Times of India, Deschamps rejected that idea immediately.

“No, he hasn’t changed. You make him seem like a dictator. Kylian has an image for some people on the outside that doesn’t correspond at all to reality,” he said.

Deschamps rejects the narrative

Mbappé has become one of the dominant figures of the World Cup, both on the pitch and online.

His goals, authority and captaincy have fuelled a wave of memes portraying him as a figure with unusually strong influence around the French national team. The joke has followed him through the tournament, but Deschamps made clear that he does not recognise that version of his captain.

According to SoccerNews, Deschamps said: “You guys make Kylian Mbappe seem like a dictator… the reality is the opposite.”

He added: “His public image does not reflect reality at all. Kylian has always been mature and the whole team follows him.”

For Deschamps, the point was not only to protect Mbappé from criticism. It was also to underline his importance as a leader.

“I am so happy to have Kylian as captain. Whenever he speaks on and off the pitch, he represents the whole group,” he said.

A meme becomes a talking point

The “dictator” label did not emerge from France’s dressing room. It grew online.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the trend has spread across social media during the World Cup, with AI-generated clips and images presenting Mbappé as a military-style leader.

The same report noted that the meme was strengthened by several moments from France’s campaign, including Mbappé directing activity during a weather delay and instructing how the captain’s armband should be passed on when he was substituted.

In reality, those moments were far less dramatic than the online interpretation suggested.

That was Deschamps’ message after the Paraguay match. Mbappé may be France’s biggest star, but the coach insisted he is not an overpowering presence within the group.

Mbappé delivers again

On the pitch, Mbappé remains France’s decisive figure.

According to FIFA’s official match centre, France beat Paraguay 1-0 in Philadelphia, with Mbappé scoring from the penalty spot in the 70th minute.

It was not a comfortable night for France. Paraguay defended deep, disrupted the rhythm of the match and forced Les Bleus into one of their least fluent performances of the tournament.

But Mbappé still found the moment that mattered.

His penalty put France into the quarter-finals and continued a remarkable World Cup scoring run. SoccerNews reports that Mbappé has now scored seven goals at the 2026 tournament and 19 World Cup goals in total.

France move on with their captain central

Deschamps also acknowledged the difficult nature of the Paraguay match.

The France coach said his players had been prepared for a physical and emotional contest, while also pointing to tension from the opposition bench.

Quoted by The Times of India, he said: “I’ve seen a lot of things. I have prepared the players. The players were expecting this game. I do not want to criticise Paraguay. Each team plays the way they want.”

He added: “But there were some insults from the other bench which I could have done without.”

France now move on to face Morocco, with Mbappé once again at the centre of attention.

The outside noise around him is unlikely to disappear. If anything, his growing influence and goal record will only make the spotlight brighter.

Deschamps, however, has made his position clear. To him, Mbappé is not a problem to manage.

He is the captain France follow.
