England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup last 16 was overshadowed by significant injury concerns for both nations. Mexico’s Santiago Gimenez was rushed to hospital following a late ankle injury, while England midfielder Jordan Henderson also sustained a wrist injury during post-match celebrations.
Gimenez suffers serious ankle sprain
AC Milan forward Santiago Gimenez suffered a serious ankle injury in the 98th minute of the contest at Estadio Azteca. The Mexican star landed awkwardly on his ankle while chasing the ball, an incident that meant Mexico played the final moments of the match with 10 men.
Following assessment, Gimenez has been diagnosed with a second-degree sprain to his ankle. Fortunately, there is no fracture, but the injury is expected to keep him out of action for approximately eight weeks. “Santiago Giménez presents a second-degree sprain. Eight weeks out, fortunately NO fracture,” Mexican journalist Rubén Rodríguez reported on X.
The match itself was a pulsating affair. England took a commanding lead through two quick goals from Jude Bellingham in the 36th and 38th minutes. Julian Quinones pulled one back for Mexico on 42 minutes, setting up a tense second half. England were reduced to 10 men when Jarell Quansah received a straight red card in the 54th minute. Harry Kane converted a penalty for England in the 60th minute, only for Raul Jimenez to score Mexico’s second penalty nine minutes later, ensuring a nervy finish.

Henderson’s celebration turns sour
For England, the celebrations of their hard-fought win were marred by an injury to Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson. During the post-match festivities, Henderson lost his footing while climbing over an advertising board, falling directly onto his wrist. He is currently undergoing assessment for the injury.
England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed his concern following the incident. Speaking to the BBC, Tuchel said: “He injured his wrist, he’s gone to hospital. It’s quite a serious injury. It doesn’t fit with the night. I don’t know if there will be a procedure.”
England will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals, where they are set to face Norway, who secured their spot by defeating Brazil 2-1.
