According to GIVEMESPORT, Norway produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 World Cup by defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1, with Erling Haaland scoring twice in the closing stages to eliminate one of the tournament favourites.
The contest looked destined to head into a tense finish before the Manchester City striker took control. Haaland opened the scoring in the 79th minute with a towering header before sealing the victory in the 90th minute with a composed finish as Brazil desperately searched for an equaliser.
Neymar’s emotions boil over
Brazil gave themselves a glimmer of hope when substitute Neymar converted a late penalty, but the goal ultimately proved nothing more than a consolation. Before taking the spot-kick, the veteran forward was involved in a heated confrontation with Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland as frustration began to spill over.
As highlighted by GIVEMESPORT, Neymar’s emotions continued to get the better of him during the closing moments. With Martin Ødegaard helping Norway see out the game by keeping possession, the Brazil star cynically fouled the Arsenal midfielder before shoving him in the chest, triggering a brief confrontation between both sets of players. The referee responded by showing Neymar a yellow card.

Emotional scenes after the final whistle
The defeat extends Brazil’s miserable World Cup run, with the Seleção still waiting for their first title since lifting the trophy in 2002. It also marks a sixth consecutive World Cup without triumph for the most successful nation in the competition’s history.
There were heartbreaking scenes at full-time as Neymar broke down in tears on the pitch. At 34 years old, the tournament is widely expected to have been his final World Cup, making the emotional reaction even more poignant.
Despite the tension during the match, the Brazilian forward later sought out Ødegaard after the final whistle and embraced the Norway captain in a show of mutual respect.
Reflecting on the incident, Ødegaard told Metro.co.uk: “Yes, it got a little awkward. But there was a good atmosphere afterwards. So it ended well.”
