Red card row overshadows Belgium defeat
Folarin Balogun has reflected on the controversy that surrounded his availability for the United States’ World Cup defeat to Belgium, after FIFA suspended the implementation of his automatic red card ban before the last-16 tie.
The American striker had been sent off during the USA’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, a decision that would normally have ruled him out of the following match.
Instead, FIFA allowed Balogun to play against Belgium, placing him under a one-year probationary period rather than making him serve the automatic one-match suspension.
According to The Guardian, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that he had spoken to FIFA president Gianni Infantino and asked for the red card to be reviewed.

Trump call triggers European backlash
The decision caused immediate anger in Europe, with Belgium among those questioning both the process and the timing.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office: “All I did, I asked for a review. I didn’t think it was a foul.”
FIFA maintained that the disciplinary process was handled under its own rules, but the explanation did little to calm the reaction before kick-off in Seattle.
Belgium were reportedly granted the right to challenge the decision, but Balogun remained eligible and was named in the starting line-up.

Balogun keeps focus on the pitch
Balogun, who found himself at the centre of a political and sporting storm, said he understood why the decision had become controversial.
Quoted by The Mirror, Balogun said: “When you are given a red card, the protocol is normally that you don’t play the subsequent match. When the decision is overturned, it is of course controversial. So it didn’t really surprise me.”
He added: “But as a player, my job is to go out there and focus. And I am disappointed that we were unable to win.”
His comments came after a difficult night for the USA, whose World Cup campaign ended with a 4-1 defeat.

Belgium punish USA on chaotic night
Belgium proved far too strong, advancing to the quarter-finals with a dominant performance.
According to The Times, Charles De Ketelaere scored twice, while Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku also found the net. Malik Tillman scored the USA’s only goal.
The result ended the host nation’s run in the round of 16 and sent Belgium into a quarter-final against Spain.
For Balogun, the episode ensured his name travelled far beyond the match itself. He was cleared to play, but the debate over how that clearance came about will remain one of the most unusual controversies of this World Cup.
