Lionel Messi’s sixth World Cup ended in tears rather than triumph. Spain’s victory over Argentina denied him a second consecutive title and prompted Danish football analyst Morten Bruun to declare that an extraordinary era is finally approaching its conclusion.
Bruun views the defeat as a symbolic abdication after more than two decades at the highest level. Yet while Messi’s international future remains uncertain, no retirement has been confirmed.
From Maradona debate to brutal disappointment
Only days before the final, Bruun believed another World Cup triumph could settle Argentina’s enduring debate over Messi and Diego Maradona.
As quoted in Aksel Kryhlmand’s report for Lente Desportiva, Bruun said: “For years, Argentinians have referred back to everything Diego Maradona did for Argentina. But right now, Lionel Messi is about to surpass Maradona. Imagine if Argentina wins the World Cup again.”

Instead, the final brought a dramatic reversal. Bruun now believes the influence that carried Argentina through so many defining moments has run its course.
His description of the current Argentina side as relatively ordinary is a personal assessment rather than an established fact. Lionel Scaloni’s team arrived as defending champions and reached a second successive World Cup final, although Messi’s eight goals were central to that run.
Spain silenced Messi in one-sided final
According to FIFA’s official match report, Spain won 1–0 after extra time through Ferran Torres’ 106th-minute goal.
ESPN’s account of the final recorded a 20–2 advantage in shots for Spain, with Argentina failing to register an effort on target. Enzo Fernández’s late dismissal left the defending champions with ten men before Torres struck the winner.

Bruun characterised Argentina’s performance and conduct as an ugly conclusion to Messi’s World Cup story. The statistics support the assessment that Spain dominated the match, although describing the final as “shameful” remains a matter of opinion.
Cucurella allegation requires qualification
Messi was also criticised over an incident involving Marc Cucurella following Fernández’s dismissal.
As described by Hendrik Deck in Bild, Messi appeared to indicate that Cucurella had covered his mouth while speaking during the confrontation. Such a gesture could attract attention under strengthened protocols concerning possible discriminatory remarks.
However, the report acknowledged that it was unclear whether Cucurella had actually covered his mouth. He was neither dismissed nor sanctioned, meaning claims that Messi deliberately attempted to have him sent off should be treated as interpretation rather than confirmed fact.

No retirement announcement from Messi
According to Jaclyn Hendricks’ report for People, Messi wrote in a translated statement: “The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal. But I also hold on to all the good…”
He thanked Argentina’s supporters, praised his teammates and congratulated Spain, but made no announcement about retiring from international football.
Bruun expects Messi to receive one final appearance in Buenos Aires, giving Argentine supporters an opportunity to say goodbye. For now, however, no such farewell match has been confirmed.
A legacy beyond the final defeat
Messi’s longevity remains almost without precedent. The recognised record of Pelé’s Brazil career lists 92 appearances and shows that he played his final international at 30. The RSSSF archive of Maradona’s Argentina career records 91 appearances, the last coming when he was 33.

Messi has surpassed their combined total and continued representing Argentina at 39. He won the World Cup on his fifth attempt in 2022 before returning for a sixth tournament four years later.
His eight Ballon d’Or awards also remain a record, three ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo’s five, as confirmed by beIN Sports’ comparison of the two players.
Whether the defeat to Spain proves to be Messi’s final international appearance remains unknown. Bruun may see an abdication, but until Messi makes his decision, the curtain has not officially fallen.
