Kylian Mbappé sat down with Vanity Fair and was asked what his signature dish is. He looked at the camera and said, evenly, that the Mbappé Special is “for example, nothing.”
The clip went up on Vanity Fair’s TikTok in early July and cleared 14 million views inside a week. What travelled was not the answer itself. It was the delivery, the same expression Mbappé might use to describe a bad first touch.
The meme did not stay near football
Within days, TikTok had lifted the phrase and stretched it. A user opens an empty fridge and finds the Mbappé Special. A relationship deteriorates into the Mbappé Special. A blank restaurant menu offers only the Mbappé Special. Yahoo Entertainment catalogued the format as it took off, describing “Mbappé Special” as a comedic stand-in for the word “nothing”.
The template mostly does not mention Mbappé at all. “Mbappé Special” now functions as a two-word substitute for bad coffee, an empty inbox, an underwhelming pay raise. The football is incidental.

Deadpan is the format
Deadpan travels online because it survives compression. A ten-second clip has to land on a face and a beat, and Mbappé provided both. The interviewer was fishing for a dish. He gave the shortest possible answer, then added quietly that he is still learning to cook.
That is the specific register memes seem to want from athletes right now. Not the celebration and not the tunnel walk. The moment where a global star, sat in front of a Vanity Fair camera during the World Cup, admits with total calm to being bad at something small.
“It will continue to hurt for a while”
Mbappé’s summer was not supposed to end this way. France finished fourth at the World Cup, losing 6-4 to England in the third-place play-off after being knocked out by Spain in the semifinals. Mbappé still won the Golden Boot with 10 goals and four assists, the highest tally of goal involvements at a single World Cup since 1966, and became the tournament’s all-time top scorer with 22 goals, overtaking Lionel Messi’s 21.

“We didn’t win a team trophy. It hurts, and it will continue to hurt for a while; I won’t lie to you about that,” he told reporters.
The meme sits on top of all of that. France’s forward lost a semifinal, broke a goalscoring record older than he is, spoke publicly about the heartbreak, and became a piece of TikTok slang for empty fridges. The line he will hear repeated all summer is his own two-word answer about cooking.
