Can it really be true? The internet is buzzing over an unconfirmed Messi rumor

The name at the top of the leaked list is the one nobody can stop asking about.

If it is real, Lionel Messi will be inside Funchal Cathedral on Saturday when Cristiano Ronaldo says “I do” to Georgina Rodriguez. If it isn’t, the rumor will still have done its job for two full news cycles.

Ronaldo, 41, and Rodriguez, 32, are reported to be marrying on Saturday, 8 August in Ronaldo’s native Madeira. The ceremony is expected at 3pm local time at Funchal Cathedral, with a reception at the five-star Savoy Palace hotel, where two floors and several bar areas have been closed to guests for a private event across Friday and Saturday.

Neither Ronaldo nor Rodriguez has confirmed any of it.

The list, and the journalist behind it

The names in circulation online are familiar enough to have set social media on fire. Alongside Messi, they include Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, MMA icon Khabib Nurmagomedov, the Beckham family, Rihanna and YouTuber IShowSpeed. Other versions add Rio Ferdinand, Vin Diesel, Jennifer Lopez, Drake and Travis Scott.

The catch: nobody on the list has confirmed a thing. The Uzbek outlet Zamin.uz attributed the guest list to journalist Esegbona Luis but noted it “was not possible to independently verify the guest list attributed to Esegbona Luis through other reliable sources”, and that “neither Messi, his wife Antonela Roccuzzo, Neymar nor their representatives have confirmed receiving invitations”.

The list is also arriving in the wake of one wedding leak that already misfired. Portuguese television program V+ Fama showed what it claimed was an invitation for a ceremony on 1 August at the Quinta da Regaleira palace in Sintra, with an unusual black dress code for guests.

Spanish outlet Hola debunked the invitation days later, pointing out that the palace remained open to tourists on the date in question and had a scheduled evening concert booked in, both of which made a private celebrity wedding on the same day implausible.

What a Messi appearance would actually mean

The rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi has been the axis around which men’s football has turned for a generation.

They cross paths occasionally at Ballon d’Or nights and pre-tournament galas. They do not turn up at each other’s private events.

Messi walking into Funchal Cathedral on Saturday would be the closest thing to a symbolic full stop that rivalry has ever had, the moment where the two men who have divided a global sport into two camps end up in the same pew. Which is, of course, why the rumor is doing the traffic it is.

The rest of the reported list, if genuine, would be almost as loud. Mbappe and Vinicius Junior would represent the current Real Madrid front line at the wedding of the club’s all-time top scorer.

Khabib, an open Ronaldo admirer, and IShowSpeed, whose Ronaldo-themed streams have long since crossed into folklore, would give the room a global-culture reach that goes well past football.

No confirmations, one Saturday

Ronaldo signed a new deal at Al Nassr in June 2025 that ties him to the Saudi club until 2027, and pre-season is not far away. Rodriguez has said nothing about the wedding either way.

The Savoy Palace booking, the leaked list and the reported cathedral slot all point one way, but the couple’s own silence is still the loudest thing about the whole story.

Saturday afternoon in Funchal will settle the rest.
