Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes is set to complete a significant £75 million transfer to Arsenal, marking a pivotal moment in the club’s summer rebuild under new manager Matthias Jaissle. The 28-year-old midfielder bid an emotional farewell to his teammates and staff at Newcastle’s training camp in Spain, confirming a departure that was decided before Jaissle’s arrival.

Jaissle, 38, who recently took the helm from Eddie Howe, acknowledged the situation in his first meeting with reporters. “I met him quickly, but the decision was already made,” Jaissle stated, indicating the scale of the task he inherits. He praised the outgoing captain, adding, “He’s a fantastic player and a great human being. It’s tough but for him now it’s the next challenge and we need to deal with it at a later stage.”

A significant squad overhaul

Guimaraes’ move to Arsenal makes him the fourth key player to depart St James’ Park in less than a year. The club has seen a significant exodus of established talent, including:

• Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool last summer.

• Sandro Tonali, who moved to Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the current transfer window.

• Anthony Gordon, who transferred to Barcelona earlier this summer.

This wave of departures underscores a dramatic shift in Newcastle’s transfer strategy. The club has pivoted towards targeting younger players from the Continent, investing approximately £146 million in new signings to date.

Jaissle embraces the challenge

Among the new arrivals are goalkeepers Lukas Hornicek, 24, and Ewen Jaouen, midfielders Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur, and winger Bazoumana Toure. Notably, none of these five new players, nor manager Jaissle himself, possess prior experience in the Premier League. Jaissle, who previously enjoyed trophy-laden spells with Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia and RB Salzburg in Austria, views this lack of top-flight English experience not as a hindrance, but as an opportunity.

Addressing the club’s extensive rebuild, Jaissle expressed a clear vision for the future. “This is a challenge and there are so many transitions at the moment. Many big players left – legends of the club – but we need to see it as a chance,” he explained. “Not having too many excuses now, just thinking forward about what we can influence. Control the controllables, I used to say, and I’m sure there will be progress this season.”

Club legend Alan Shearer, writing for BBC Sport, extended his “very best wishes” to Jaissle but also warned of a “tough season” ahead for Newcastle. The new era will be immediately tested when Newcastle United kicks off its Premier League campaign against Liverpool at St James’ Park on August 23.
