Thirty minutes that never came: the Jesus promise Ronaldo says ended his Portugal career

Ronaldo warmed up along the touchline in Norway on 27 September, told before kick-off he would come on for the final half-hour, and never heard his number called. Portugal won 2-1 in the Nations League. Their captain stayed in his tracksuit for all 90 minutes.

That unused cameo, Ronaldo said in a statement reported by Al Jazeera, was the second time coach Jorge Jesus had gone back on an agreement.

“The manager had broken his word to me.”

The first, Ronaldo said, had been the broader deal struck before the September window: Jesus was to rotate him out of the Norway and Denmark fixtures to manage his fitness, then publicly explain that choice as his own call. The match-day amendment, the 30-minute cameo, was meant to soften the omission.

The press conference that forced the issue

The following morning, Jesus faced reporters before the trip to Denmark and confirmed Ronaldo would again sit out. That left the 41-year-old carrying a second consecutive benching he says he had not agreed to.

He left camp without permission on 30 September, telling Al Jazeera later that he had decided to walk rather than wait for a third broken promise.

A 255-euro fine and a 30-day ban

The Portuguese Football Federation handed Ronaldo a 30-day suspension and a 255-euro fine for the walkout, calling the punishment “adequate and sufficient” after his confession and clean disciplinary record were factored in. The fine is the maximum the federation can impose once mitigating circumstances apply. The suspension began on 1 October, the day of the Denmark fixture.

Ronaldo had indicated he still wanted to come back.

“If I’m physically fit, playing for my club, scoring goals, I hope, after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I’ll be available,” he said in the same apology.

Jesus: “I asked him to continue”

That return did not happen. On Thursday, Ronaldo posted a video on Instagram and X ending his Portugal career after 23 years.

“It was not an easy decision, because there are decisions that are not made only with the head. They are also made with the heart,” he said in the retirement message cited by Al Jazeera.

Jesus, who coached Ronaldo at Al-Nassr before taking the national-team job, spoke to Portuguese broadcaster Canal 11 within hours.

“I asked him to continue with me because I needed him by my side. But I have to accept his decision.”

Portugal’s next Nations League match is at home to Denmark on 14 November.
