The wedding at Funchal’s Sé Cathedral on Saturday belonged to Fábio Santos Ramos and Fátima Nicole Cunha Teixeira, a Madeira-born couple who had travelled back from France to marry at home. It did not belong to Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez, no matter what the crowd outside had convinced itself.

Chants of “It’s him! It’s him!” went up every time a car pulled onto the square, Goal reported. By 3pm local time roughly 2,000 people had massed there with phones raised, according to Euronews, after British tabloid rumours placed the world’s most-followed footballer at the altar.

Those rumours were unusually specific. The Sun had reported that Ronaldo would marry Rodríguez at 3pm at the cathedral with the reception at the five-star Savoy Palace in Funchal, and Yahoo News noted that the hotel had indeed blocked out two floors for a private event that day. The identity of the private client was never made public.

The bride was not Georgina

Bridesmaids and cathedral staff had to shout at the crowd that the woman arriving was not Rodríguez. Once inside, the wedding party began to lean into the mistake.

“We feel like we’re famous,” one guest told the regional daily Diário de Notícias da Madeira. “I find it astonishing that these people believed Ronaldo would get married today without security.”

Even the Sé’s diocese ended up joining the story.

“After much confusion in the street, with this large number of journalists and tourists, we finally managed to close the church and celebrate,” it wrote on Facebook, in a post relayed by Goal.

Ronaldo reacts with laughing emojis

Ronaldo, the most-followed person on Instagram, added laughing emojis under a Jornal da Madeira post about the chaos, beIN Sports reported. Rodríguez, whose feed has been under a wedding-watch for months, has posted nothing about it.

The couple confirmed their engagement in 2025 after nearly a decade together, but they have never publicly named a wedding date or venue. Whether they married somewhere far from the square on Saturday, whether the ceremony still lies ahead, or whether the whole rumour cycle was invention from the start, is as unresolved on Monday as it was before the first fan arrived. The only certainty from Funchal is that the church belonged to Fábio and Nicole.
