Manchester United’s 2026-27 Premier League campaign began with a disappointing 2-0 loss to Hull City, a result that has intensified the club’s pursuit of further transfer reinforcements, particularly in the left-back position. The defeat at the MKM Stadium, where goals from Semi Ajayi (17′) and Nobel Mendy (38′) sealed Hull’s victory, underscored that Michael Carrick’s squad still requires significant additions despite a busy summer.
The Old Trafford club has already moved to bolster its midfield, securing Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, both of whom started in the opening day defeat. A third midfield acquisition, Carlos Baleba, is also nearing completion, with Brighton & Hove Albion accepting a reported £70 million offer. Baleba is expected at Carrington for a medical, a move that aligns with INEOS’s strategy to complete Manchester United’s midfield rebuild.
Left-back becomes crucial area of focus
However, the display against Hull City highlighted that Manchester United’s transfer work extends beyond the engine room. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the left-back position has become a crucial area for attention. “It’s been a bad day for Manchester United, losing to Hull City on the opening 2026-27 Premier League game, but still Manchester United is looking for more signings after Carlos Baleba,” Romano stated on his YouTube channel. “The left-back position is going to be crucial, the left-back position is going to be definitely one to watch and I would still keep an eye on movements in that area.”
The need for an alternative to Luke Shaw is evident. Shaw, who started at left-back against Hull and was an ever-present in all 38 Premier League games last season, currently lacks a natural option for rotation. An earlier interest in Lewis Hall is unlikely to progress due to Newcastle United’s firm stance.

Attention has now turned to Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde. Manchester United reportedly held a call with Balde’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to inquire about the conditions of a potential deal. Reports from Spain suggest Balde is “100% leaving Barcelona” following a meeting with Mendes, with Hansi Flick having opened the door for his departure. Romano elaborated on the complexities of such a move:
“It’s important to understand how much United can spend on that position because the name I gave you over the week as a possibility is Alejandro Balde,” Romano explained. “Jorge Mendes had a call with Manchester United, Man United were asking for conditions of a deal for Alejandro Balde. Let’s see if they can afford in terms of transfer fee but also salary because Balde is on a big salary at Barcelona.”
Other squad concerns remain
Beyond the left-back role, other areas of the squad also raised questions during the Hull defeat. Upfront, Matheus Cunha started but struggled, though Benjamin Sesko came off the bench and is returning to full fitness after a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Defensively, concerns persist regarding the reliability of centre-backs, with Lisandro Martinez having endured fitness troubles throughout his United spell and Matthijs de Ligt’s impending return from injury also noted.
The comprehensive loss to Hull City has served as an immediate reminder that despite significant investment, Manchester United’s squad still requires further strengthening if they are to compete at the top of the Premier League.
