Serena and Venus Williams are back in a US Open doubles draw. The United States Tennis Association awarded them a wild card on Wednesday, adding the sisters to a field where Serena is already competing.

Venus, 46, and Serena, 44, have not played doubles together at a Grand Slam since the 2022 US Open, where they were beaten in the first round. Their return this month at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati followed a similar pattern: a 6-2 first set to Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns, a 6-1 rally in the second, and a 10-8 match tiebreak loss on 17 August.

Fourteen majors between them

The sisters have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles as a pair. Two of those came at Flushing Meadows, in 1999 and 2009. They also share three Olympic gold medals in doubles.

Across nine previous appearances at the US Open women’s doubles they have gone 27-7. The 2026 event will be their tenth entry together at the tournament.

Serena’s second event of the fortnight

The women’s doubles wild card lands in the middle of a busier US Open than anyone predicted for Serena, who returned to the tour during the grass-court season after nearly four years away.

She partnered Carlos Alcaraz in the redesigned mixed doubles event, winning her first-round match 5-3, 4-1 over Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool before falling 5-4 (4), 4-1 to Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli in the quarter-finals.

“It’s always such an amazing place to be here,” she told reporters after her opening mixed doubles win.

“I never expected to be back on this court, so it’s just a really cool moment.”

Venus arrives with a triple schedule of her own. She holds a singles wild card as well and is in the redesigned mixed doubles field alongside Reilly Opelka after receiving a separate wild card for that event.

The women’s doubles final is scheduled for 11 September at Flushing Meadows.
