The chancellor’s unusual intervention
Germany entered its home World Cup under intense pressure. Klinsmann had broken with established structures, introduced unfamiliar training methods and challenged influential figures within German football.
Bild became one of his loudest critics. His tactics, personnel decisions and decision to remain based in California were repeatedly questioned. With the tournament approaching, Klinsmann and assistant Joachim Löw turned to an unexpected crisis adviser.
According to ZDF’s account of the intervention, the coaches met Merkel at the Chancellery and asked how she handled hostile media pressure.
Merkel listened and asked them: “Where are your problem areas?”

She then offered to bring Klinsmann and Löw together with senior representatives of Axel Springer, Bild’s publishing company. The subsequent meeting took place in Tuscany, where the coaches presented their plan for the national team to leading editors.
Klinsmann later described an understanding, brokered by Merkel, that the parties would approach the World Cup together. There was also a price: if the project failed, he would be expected to leave.
The media tone softened, Germany gathered momentum and the team eventually finished third. That does not prove Merkel produced the sporting turnaround, but her intervention helped remove a damaging distraction at a critical moment.
A joke that aged quickly
Two decades later, Merkel was asked to rank possible crisis-management jobs in retirement. WDR reported from the May 2026 interview that becoming Germany’s national coach came last. She was careful not to create an unwanted headline about Julian Nagelsmann shortly before the World Cup.

The caution proved ironic. The German Football Association later confirmed that Nagelsmann resigned on July 3 after Germany’s elimination by Paraguay. Jürgen Klopp was appointed on July 24 and officially took over on August 15.
Merkel’s real football position
Merkel was never responsible for formations, substitutions or squad selections. Her influence belonged to a different arena: managing power, pressure and competing interests.
Her involvement also raises an uncomfortable question. Should a serving chancellor mediate between a national coach and a major newspaper group?
There is no evidence that Merkel dictated coverage. What she provided was access and a channel for negotiation. In the heated months before the “Summer Fairytale,” that may have been one of Germany’s most important assists.
