Jamie Carragher has dramatically altered his Premier League title race prediction for the 2026/27 season, citing Enzo Fernandez’s record £125 million deadline day transfer from Chelsea to Manchester City as the pivotal factor. The former Liverpool defender now believes City, embarking on a new era without Pep Guardiola, are Arsenal’s primary challengers for the coveted trophy.
The seismic transfer saw Manchester City agree a staggering fee with Chelsea for the Argentine midfielder, a move that immediately sent shockwaves through the league. Fernandez joins a host of players who have commanded fees over £100 million in the current transfer window, including Elliott Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Bradley Barcola, and Morgan Rogers, highlighting the intense financial arms race at the top of English football.
Man City’s new midfield strength
Carragher’s revised outlook places Manchester City firmly ahead of Chelsea in the pecking order. “Man City look a lot stronger now. I would say they’re going to be the biggest challengers to Arsenal right now. It is a really good squad. There’s no doubt about that,” Carragher stated on Sky Sports. He acknowledged the significant turnover at City, particularly the departure of Rodri, but sees the arrivals of Anderson and now Fernandez as a formidable response. “If you said at the end of last season, they would bring in Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez, you’d say, that’s a top midfield. They’ve paid top dollar for it, so it should be,” he added.
The acquisition of Fernandez significantly bolsters a Manchester City side that has started the 2026/27 season with two wins. Their latest victory, a 2-1 triumph over Bournemouth, was secured by a late strike from Josko Gvardiol, following a more convincing performance against Crystal Palace.

Chelsea’s title hopes take a hit
For Chelsea, the departure of Fernandez is a substantial blow to their aspirations under new manager Xabi Alonso. Despite a promising start to the season, scoring seven goals in two games, their defensive record of five goals conceded raises questions. Carragher had initially tipped Chelsea for a strong campaign, partly due to their lack of European football this season. “He certainly pushes Man City above Chelsea. Myself and plenty of others have felt Chelsea will have a really good season,” Carragher explained. “And I still believe that a lot of that is on the back of not having European football, having a new manager, the front three that they’ve got. But they’re losing Enzo Fernandez, who, for me has been one of the big players for Chelsea.”
Chelsea’s attack, featuring talents like Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, and Morgan Rogers, remains potent, but the loss of a key midfield orchestrator like Fernandez could prove difficult to overcome.
Arsenal remain the benchmark
Arsenal, who sealed their first league title since 2004 in the 2024 season, remain the team to beat. With Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City all winning their opening two league games – a feat also achieved by Hull City – the early stages of the Premier League season are already hinting at a thrilling contest. However, for Carragher, the transfer market’s latest blockbuster deal has clarified the picture at the very top. “I think that gives them the greatest chance of being the main challengers and maybe the only team who can really wrestle this title from Arsenal,” he concluded on Sky Sports.
