Matchday 1 of the Champions League league phase is six days away. The paperwork that decides who plays in it is due tonight.
UEFA requires each of the 36 participating clubs to submit its List A squad and have it verified by the relevant national association by 23:59 CET on Wednesday 2 September 2026. A player who is not on that list cannot represent his club in the league phase, which begins on 8 September and runs through 27 January 2027.
Liverpool confirmed the signing of France international Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain on Monday, hours before the Premier League window shut. Al Jazeera reported the deal as a five-year contract worth about $162m. Chelsea, weeks earlier, completed a record-breaking £117m move for Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers. Arsenal signed Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimarães on 9 August for £75m.
None of them plays in the league phase unless the paperwork is with UEFA, national-association stamp attached, by midnight in central Europe.

The 25-name rule, and the eight that are ring-fenced
List A takes a maximum of 25 players, at least two of them goalkeepers. Eight of the 25 places are ring-fenced for locally trained players, and no more than four of those may be “association-trained” rather than “club-trained”. Club-trained means registered with the club for at least three entire seasons, or 36 months, between the ages of 15 and 21.
A club that cannot fill the locally-trained quota does not backfill the empty places with senior imports. The squad size is cut instead. That is the trap for sides that have leaned heavily on foreign recruitment or thinned out their academies.
The verification step is the one that catches clubs out. Submissions do not go from the club to UEFA in isolation. They pass through the national association, which has to validate every registration in time. A deadline-day arrival whose international transfer certificate clears late is the highest-risk case on any list tonight.
List B, and the youth route senior signings do not get
List B is where academy players and later signings can sit. It can be amended throughout the season and must be filed no later than 23:59 CET on the day before each match. Young players who meet UEFA’s eligibility window can be added to it after tonight.

Senior signings cannot. A nine-figure recruit who does not make List A tonight also does not qualify for List B, and simply watches the league phase.
Draw done, fixtures set, clock ticking
The 36 clubs learned their opponents at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on Thursday 27 August. Each side plays eight league-phase fixtures, four at home and four away, with matchdays spread across September to January and the final scheduled for the Metropolitano in Madrid on 5 June 2027.
Matchday 1 opens on 8 September. Any player still off List A when the association-verified files close tonight will not appear in that opening week, and the next window for a formal squad refresh does not arrive until the knockout stage.
