Benn has picked a lane and stayed in it. Nine days out from T-Mobile Arena, the Briton is talking about a knockout. His own knockout.

“I plan on going in there and getting a stoppage, for sure,” Benn told Sky Sports.

“I’m just going to go in there and do what I do, which is plant one on his chin and try and put him to sleep.”

He was even blunter to Ring.

“No doubt I’ll be looking for the stoppage myself. I think I’ll stop him. Yeah, I do,” he said.

The belt his father Nigel once carried

Garcia claimed the WBC welterweight title in February with a decision over Mario Barrios and defends it here for the first time. For Benn, it is his first world title challenge, and the belt has a familiar name attached to it: his father, Nigel Benn, carried the same strap as a super middleweight in the early 1990s.

“For me to get a world title shot, the prestigious WBC world title, the belt my dad won, it’s a blessing,” Benn said.

He is walking into Las Vegas as the underdog and says he prefers it that way.

“I like being the underdog. I think I perform at my best.”

Garcia: he is already setting up the excuse

Garcia is listening to the same run of interviews and hearing something else in them. Benn has said the September 12 bout will be his last at 147 pounds, whatever the result, and the champion has filed that away as an in-case-of-defeat alibi.

“A million percent. He already set it up,” Garcia told FightHype.

“You already heard him say, ‘This is my last fight at 147.’ Who wants to become a champion and then leave the division?”

“Bro is making excuses. He’s not going to become a champion, but I’m saying, who would do that? It makes no sense unless you’re setting up an excuse. He didn’t have to say that.”

The champion has also put a clock on the night.

“I feel like if I don’t knock him out within five rounds, I’ll be a little disappointed in myself,” Garcia said.

“I am training to knock him out under five. This fight is five and below. I’m here to become a legend.”

Garcia vs. Benn tops a nine-fight card at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday, September 12, staged during Mexican Independence Day weekend under the Zuffa Boxing and Ring Magazine banner. Jai Opetaia defends his cruiserweight title against Noel Mikaelian in the co-feature, with Mark Magsayo vs. Andres Cortes and Jose Ramirez vs. Alexis Rocha also on the card.
