The last time Manchester City left the Estádio do Dragão, they left as beaten Champions League finalists, undone by Kai Havertz’s first-half goal in the 2021 final that UEFA had relocated from Istanbul over COVID-19 travel restrictions. On Tuesday night in the same stadium, Erling Haaland walked off with two goals and a place in the club’s all-time top three.

Haaland headed City in front in the 47th minute, meeting a cross from Enzo Fernández, and rolled in a second in the first minute of stoppage time from a Rayan Aït-Nouri ball across the six-yard box. The result opened Enzo Maresca’s first Champions League campaign as City manager with a comfortable away win.

Those goals took his Manchester City tally to 167 in 203 appearances, past Tommy Johnson’s 166 between 1920 and 1930, and into third place on the club’s all-time scoring list. Only Sergio Agüero (260) and Eric Brook (177) have scored more.

Level with Agüero in Europe

The 36th of Haaland’s City goals came in the Champions League, a total that puts him level with Agüero as the club’s leading scorer in the competition. Across his whole career the Norwegian now has 59 Champions League goals in 59 matches.

Diogo Costa kept the score down for as long as he could, denying Haaland, Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki inside the opening 45 minutes before the header beat him after the break.

The win was a fourth-round-of-16 rematch of sorts: it took Maresca, who succeeded Pep Guardiola in June, back to the venue of City’s 2021 final defeat and out again with three points.
