Coulthard’s diagnosis is not about the car. It is about the moment.

“Charles Leclerc is really, really talented because he’s managed to crash in the same place twice, and I’m trying to get my head round a corner where you don’t normally crash,” the former F1 driver said in comments carried by RacingNews365.

“He just has a little glitch, and at that moment of the glitch, it’s so difficult to put into words, he just gets it wrong, doesn’t he?”

Coulthard framed the lapse as an occasional whiteout inside an otherwise elite driver, the flaw within the brilliance. Parabolica is now the second data point after Leclerc’s 2020 Italian Grand Prix ended in the same barriers.

What actually happened on lap 2

Leclerc lost the rear of the Ferrari through Parabolica on lap 2 of Sunday’s race while defending fourth from Oscar Piastri’s McLaren. He ran wide, dropped two wheels beyond the white line, clipped a drain cover on the exit and speared into the outside barriers at speed. The car was destroyed, the race went red, and he walked to the medical centre for precautionary checks before being released without injury.

His own working theory pointed away from any driving glitch.

“I think I’ll have quite a few additional checks that we still have to do on my side, probably tonight and tomorrow, to make sure that I’ll be fully fine for Madrid,” Leclerc told reporters.

“The right eye was not showing me great vision, but now it’s all good.”

On the cause, he pointed at the power unit rather than his own inputs, saying “a difference in power delivery” had triggered the loss of control. He wanted to see the data before saying more.

Ferrari leave Monza with eight points

The wider picture at Monza is why the crash cuts so deep. Ferrari collected just eight points across the weekend as Kimi Antonelli won for Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton salvaged sixth after being pushed wide by Leclerc at the start.

Team principal Frédéric Vasseur did not dress it up.

“We all have the feeling to have failed something, but be sure that we will come back much stronger,” Vasseur said.

“With all the Tifosi, we were expecting to give them something else as a big thank you.”

Hamilton is third in the drivers’ standings on 191 points, Leclerc fifth on 155, both a long way from Antonelli’s 267 at the top.

Leclerc’s Madrid start depends on further vision checks

Whether Leclerc lines up at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid on Sunday, 13 September depends on those additional checks. He said he was not 100 per cent certain of racing and wanted to be “better safe than sorry”. Ferrari has made no announcement about its line-up.
