Ronaldo, Messi and Beckham’s staggering fortunes revealed – but there’s a major difference

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and David Beckham have each passed the billion-dollar line in 2026 via three very different routes through the modern football economy.

Three footballers. Three fortunes. Three completely different ways of getting there.

Forbes estimated Lionel Messi’s net worth at $1.1 billion on 7 October 2026, placing him among a handful of athletes who have reached billionaire status while still playing. Cristiano Ronaldo is valued at between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion in 2026 reporting from Forbes and other financial publications. And David Beckham joined the Sunday Times Rich List billionaires on 16 May 2026, with a combined family fortune of £1.185 billion alongside his wife Victoria.

None of them took the same road.

Ronaldo’s record Al-Nassr salary

Ronaldo, 41, arrived in Riyadh at the end of 2022 and his pay packet promptly broke the sport. Celebrity Net Worth lays out the June 2025 contract extension that pushed him over the line: a package worth around £492 million (about $620 million) running through June 2027, with a base salary of roughly £178 million a year, a £24.5 million signing bonus and a 15 per cent ownership stake in the club.

On top of the wages sits one of the richest sponsorship deals in sport. His 2016 Nike agreement is a lifetime contract valued at around $1 billion. Add Herbalife, TAG Heuer, the Pestana CR7 hotels and the Insparya hair-restoration business, and his annual earnings sit above $300 million. Forbes puts his earnings from the game alone at roughly $235 million over the past twelve months.

Messi’s endorsements and Miami equity

Messi, 39, carries the smallest headline salary of the trio and the broadest commercial empire. His Inter Miami cap hit is listed at $28.3 million, but club co-owner Jorge Mas told Bloomberg the real number is “$70 million to $80 million a year” once Adidas and Apple TV revenue-sharing is folded in.

Lifetime Adidas, signed in 2017, is the centrepiece. According to Forbes, more than $600 million of Messi’s career income has come from endorsements, memorabilia and business ventures, against roughly $1.2 billion from playing contracts.

The most valuable asset might be the one he does not own yet. Messi’s Inter Miami deal includes an option to acquire an equity stake in the club after he retires. The option is attached to a franchise Forbes now rates as the most valuable in Major League Soccer.

Beckham’s Inter Miami stake

Beckham’s path is the oldest and the slowest. When he signed for LA Galaxy in 2007, his contract contained a clause letting him buy an MLS franchise at a discounted price. He exercised it, built Inter Miami, and in May 2026 Forbes valued the club at $1.35 billion, a record for the league, which the magazine said put his reported 26 per cent stake north of $300 million.

Forbes also totted up Beckham’s combined ventures, the Inter Miami stake, DRJB Holdings and the rest of the portfolio, at roughly $1 billion in May 2026, making him a billionaire on his own account. Victoria Beckham’s fashion and beauty company, with revenues above £100 million, pushed the family wealth on the Sunday Times Rich List to £1.185 billion.

What changed in the last decade

A CEOWorld analysis published on 26 October 2026 credits three structural changes for making football’s first billionaire class possible: Saudi Arabia’s domestic league spending, which created a new tier of club wages; equity-based deals supplementing straight salary; and digital audiences large enough to turn a player’s name into a standalone business.

Ronaldo’s 670 million Instagram followers, who command between $2.5 million and $3.5 million per sponsored post according to Celebrity Net Worth, show the scale.
