A golden rampant lion is the thread running through everything Chelsea will wear on the pitch this season. The refreshed crest sits on all three Nike shirts unveiled across the summer, tying the collection back to Ted Drake’s era in the early 1950s, the moment the club replaced its “Pensioners” nickname with “the Blues” and introduced the lion.

The home shirt is Bright Blue with Midwest Gold accents, the crest interwoven directly into the fabric on the chest, and a button-down collar that leans into the retro brief. It uses Nike’s Aero-FIT cooling fabric, which Nike calls its first elite performance apparel made from 100% textile waste.

“Can’t Tame Us” opens the collection

Chelsea launched the home shirt in early June under a global campaign called “Can’t Tame Us”, built by agencies TILL DAWN and ICONIC and rolled out with flyposters, murals and projections in London, Los Angeles, São Paulo, Sydney and Hong Kong. The rollout also leaned on non-traditional seeding, with golfer Justin Rose wearing the shirt at the PGA Championship and Madonna wearing it during a livestream.

“We’ve been building cultural gravity around this club for a couple of seasons now,” Scott Fenton, Chelsea’s brand director, told mediabrief.com.

“The best of London culture and the best of football belong in the same room.”

A black away kit for the first time in nearly a decade

The bolder visual shift came in July, when Chelsea released an all-black away kit, the club’s first black away shirt since the 2016-17 Premier League title-winning season. It carries the concept name “Unleash The Lion” and pairs the black base with Midwest Gold engineered ribs on the shoulders and a standalone lion crest, without the surrounding ring.

Laurel wreath detailing runs around the round collar and the sleeve cuffs, echoed on the golden socks. The men’s shorts are black, and the shirt debuted on the club’s pre-season tour before the Premier League opener.

“The Rare Breed” completes the trilogy

The third kit, launched on Saturday under the tag “The Rare Breed”, pushes furthest into retro territory. The base is white with a subtle geometric shadow pattern, blue trim on the neck and sleeves, and thin vertical red pinstripes across the front and back. It swaps out Chelsea’s familiar circular badge for a shield-style retro crest, with the lion stacked above the CFC lettering, and nods to the club’s away and third shirts from the 1980s and 1990s.

Chelsea’s own copy anchors the design to mythology: “The white lion of mythology, which is the sacred and rare keeper of the land, operating on its own terms.” Men’s shorts on the third kit are white; women’s are blue.

All three replicas retail at £89.99, with the authentic match versions listed at £134.99, and the full men’s, women’s and children’s ranges are on sale now through the Megastore at Stamford Bridge and the Chelsea online store.
