Kylian Mbappé has revealed that his mother urged him to join Liverpool when he left Monaco in 2017. Fayza Lamari visited Anfield, watched matches there and pictured her son playing for Jürgen Klopp. Mbappé considered the move, but chose Paris Saint-Germain.

In an interview with The Athletic, Mbappé said Lamari was a fan of Klopp and regarded Liverpool as her preferred destination. After visiting the city and meeting people at the club, she told him he should go there. “She went to Anfield and fell in love with it,” he said.

The meeting above the south of France

Liverpool made a serious effort to persuade the teenager. Klopp met Mbappé and his family aboard a private jet in southern France, where they discussed the club’s plans while the aircraft remained in the air. Klopp described the meeting to Magenta TV earlier this year, recalling that the group flew in circles to keep the talks private.

Mbappé said he respected Klopp and had a good relationship with him. His mother’s enthusiasm also made Liverpool an attractive option. Yet the decision was his, and his connection to Paris carried more weight. He wanted to establish himself in his home city before leaving France.

Why Paris won

Mbappé joined PSG on loan in 2017 before the transfer became permanent the following year. He stayed for seven seasons, then joined Real Madrid in 2024.

He had acknowledged Liverpool’s interest before. His latest account adds a clearer picture of how far the 2017 talks went: his mother had embraced the idea, Klopp had made his pitch in person, and Mbappé still chose the chance to become a star in Paris.
