Erling Haaland would favour Barcelona over Arsenal if Manchester City’s financial case forces him out of the Etihad. That preference, first laid out by Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, is framed around the appeal of testing himself in La Liga after several seasons tearing up the Premier League.

The planning behind it has already started. Spanish journalist Juan Jesus reported on 30 September that Haaland’s entourage has walked an estimated transfer fee and a set of salary demands into Barcelona’s offices. The timeline Joan Laporta is targeting, per the same report, is late 2027 or 2028, with the Spotify Camp Nou due to be at full capacity by then.

The approach mirrors the one Rodri’s camp used before his move to Barcelona in summer 2026, with representatives briefing the club roughly two years before the deal was finalised.

The 114-charge verdict is the trigger

The scenario only applies because of what happened at the end of September. A Premier League commission found Manchester City guilty of 114 of the 115 financial breach charges that had been outstanding since February 2023, with the ruling confirmed on 28 September 2026.

The charges span the 2009-2018 period. Potential sanctions range from fines and points deductions through to a transfer embargo, with relegation sitting at the extreme end of the scale. City are appealing.

Even in the worst-case outcome, Haaland would not be able to walk out through a contractual back door. A report in Sport cited by French Football Weekly says his January 2025 agreement, which runs until 2034, does not include an automatic exit tied to the division the club plays in. Separate reports of a cut-price release clause have been publicly rejected by the club.

Arsenal insist they have not called

Arsenal’s name has been attached to the story since the verdict landed, but both ends of the line are denying it. TEAMtalk’s reporting from the day of the ruling was blunt.

“Arsenal have not had any talks regarding Haaland, while the player’s camp insists there has been no contact with the Gunners.”

Sources at the Emirates added only that a player of Haaland’s calibre would be assessed if he ever became available, and that he is not currently part of the club’s plans. The practical obstacle sits in the numbers too: any fee for a Haaland deal is projected to run well into nine figures, and the sort of release terms Barcelona have been handed are being quoted at a level that would dwarf Arsenal’s record outlay.

Barcelona’s draw and the Lewandowski window

According to Football Insider, the pull for Haaland is sporting rather than circumstantial: a new league, a different style, and a club that has viewed him as a long-standing target.

Barcelona, for their part, have reason to engage early. Robert Lewandowski’s contract runs down at the end of the current campaign, which would open the central striker spot and remove a sizeable wage line from the club’s books.

Manchester City return to Premier League action after the October international break, with the written reasons for the commission’s ruling and the sanctions phase of the case still to be published.
