Jay-Z picked himself for the Super Bowl halftime show, and nobody is surprised

The man who controls Super Bowl halftime bookings has reportedly handed the gig to himself, less than two years after calling that exact move “too selfish.”

Of course he did.

Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, who oversees halftime talent through Roc Nation’s partnership with the NFL, has reportedly selected himself to headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show on February 14, 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The scoop was broken by Puck on October 20 and amplified across US outlets this week.

The NFL is not confirming it. Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked about the Puck story at an October 21 news conference in New York, held after the league owners’ meetings, and declined to engage.

“We haven’t announced anything. Until we do, we won’t make any comment on that,” he told reporters.

That is not quite a denial, and the industry is reading it the same way everyone else is. The announcement is widely expected to come this weekend, when Jay-Z plays two sold-out dates at the same SoFi Stadium that will host the game.

The optics do the heavy lifting

Roc Nation has produced the halftime show since its 2019 partnership with the NFL, and Goodell renewed the deal in 2024 for another five years. In practice the company picks the headliner. This time the headliner is the company’s founder.

Earlier reporting had Miley Cyrus, Harry Styles and Justin Bieber in the running for the slot. All three were ultimately bumped in favor of the person doing the choosing.

The “too selfish” line, now in play

Jay-Z has addressed the conflict of interest himself. At the January 2024 red carpet premiere of “The Book of Clarence,” he was asked whether he might eventually pick himself. His answer, as quoted by Hola, left the door open:

“I thought it would be too selfish to pick myself. Maybe one year. Maybe.”

Apparently this is the “maybe.” When Roc Nation first signed its NFL deal in 2019, Jay-Z publicly insisted it was not a vehicle to get himself on the halftime stage, reportedly telling Goodell that if that was the point of the partnership, the conversation could end there. His wife, Beyoncé, headlined the 2013 show in New Orleans and returned as a guest during Coldplay’s 2016 performance in Santa Clara.

Why now

The timing is friendly. Jay-Z is on tour marking the 30th anniversary of his 1996 debut album Reasonable Doubt, and the Super Bowl halftime slot is the biggest live music platform on the planet.

Supporters argue the catalogue speaks for itself and that the show is better off with a headliner of his stature than with a pop name forced into the slot. Critics point to the obvious: it is a strange look to be the person signing off on your own booking.
