The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback spent part of his press conference this week talking about a defense he does not often praise in such detail. According to Heavy, Mahomes told reporters, via SI.com, that the Seahawks are “good at every single level of the defense. Defensive line, linebackers, secondary, everybody, and they have a great scheme.”

Mahomes added that Seattle will “make you earn it every single drive.”

That is a long way from the usual pre-game patter. Kansas City are 5-0 and arrive on the back of a 22-6 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on 18 October. The quarterback’s tone this week was less about his own form and more about who is waiting for him on the other side of the ball.

A Seattle defense built to frustrate

Head coach Andy Reid told reporters, as cited by Heavy, that Mike Macdonald’s unit is “the best in the business right now.” Reid added that the Seahawks “fly around” and give up few breakdowns on the back end.

Mahomes also goes in short-handed at receiver. Per Heavy, Tyquan Thornton is dealing with a dislocated ankle, and Rashee Rice has not practised since 4 October. Kick-off at Lumen Field is on Sunday night, 25 October, with the Seahawks confirming the Week 7 matchup.

Walker’s Seattle homecoming

The subplot almost rivals the main story. Running back Kenneth Walker III signed with Kansas City in March on a three-year deal worth up to $45 million, after helping the Seahawks win Super Bowl LX in February as the game’s MVP.

Walker has not slowed down in Kansas City. Through five games he has 655 rushing yards, six rushing touchdowns and two receiving scores, and has found the end zone in every game but one, NBC News reported. Against the Chargers alone he ran for 128 yards and two scores. Andy Reid called him “a stud” after that win.

Sunday will be his first game back at Lumen Field in a visiting jersey.
