Al-Nassr won 3-1 away at Majmaah Sports City Stadium on Friday. The scoreline is not in dispute. Who scored the second goal is.
The sequence began with a João Félix free-kick swung into the Al-Faisaly box. Ronaldo rose at the near post and appeared to make contact. Replays showed the ball glancing off Girotto a fraction later before crossing the line. The four data companies that cover Saudi Pro League matches all came to the same conclusion: Girotto own goal.
The match referee did not. On his post-game report the goal is credited to Ronaldo, and the Saudi Pro League’s own channels published the strike as his 982nd career goal.
The league v. the data industry
Saudi outlet Arriyadiyah has set out the governing principle: in the Saudi Pro League, goal attribution follows the referee’s match report, not the call made by international data agencies. Opta, SofaScore and the rest keep their own ledgers, but the league does not revise its official record to match them.

The gap matters because of the number at the end of the chase. By the Saudi Pro League’s count, Ronaldo is 18 goals short of 1,000. By Opta’s, he is 19. Every disputed header from here to the milestone will carry the same arithmetic weight.
Livescore summed up the stand-off in a line both camps can live with.
“The official match report names Ronaldo as the scorer, though, so the goal is officially his.”
‘Only one counted’
Ronaldo scored a second time in the 52nd minute, three minutes after the disputed header. VAR ruled him offside and chalked it off. Asked afterwards whether he had scored twice, he kept the answer to three words.
“Only one counted,” he said, according to World Soccer Talk.
The second goal, the one everyone agrees he scored, is the one that was wiped out. The first, the one Opta and three other platforms say he did not touch cleanly enough, is the one on the official sheet.
The other three goals in the 3-1
Abdullah Al-Hamdan opened the scoring for Al-Nassr in the first half, finishing a move involving Sadio Mané. Theo Bongonda headed a reply for Al-Faisaly before Ângelo Gabriel restored the two-goal cushion in the 79th minute to seal the 3-1 result.
Al-Nassr’s next league fixture is at home to Al-Kholood on 29 October. The goal counter sits where the two scorekeepers left it: 982 on the Saudi Pro League’s sheet, 981 on Opta’s.
