Four catches for 44 yards is not usually the Travis Kelce line that makes the morning papers. On Sunday night at Lumen Field it was enough for two entries in the record book.

Kelce’s third reception of the game moved him past Marvin Harrison (1,102) and Cris Carter (1,101) to 1,103 career regular-season catches, slotting him into fifth place all-time. A fourth catch made it 1,104. Only Jerry Rice (1,549), Larry Fitzgerald (1,432), Gonzalez (1,325) and Jason Witten (1,228) sit ahead of him on the all-time receptions leaderboard.

Including the playoffs, Kelce now has 15,423 receiving yards, ten clear of Gonzalez’s 15,413. That makes him the most prolific tight end in NFL history by that measure.

The Chiefs marked the moment on Instagram: “Killa Trav takes his rightful place in the top five.”

Record set in a 20-3 loss

The milestones arrived in a game Kansas City would rather forget. Seattle beat the Chiefs 20-3, ending Kansas City’s unbeaten start and dropping Andy Reid’s side to 5-1. Patrick Mahomes went 19 of 33 for 165 yards with an interception and no touchdowns, with the Chiefs’ offense never finding a rhythm against the Seahawks defense.

Kelce’s record-breaking catch was his longest of the night: a 19-yard reception over the middle on third-and-six in the fourth quarter, with the Chiefs already trailing 13-3.

The record Gonzalez still holds

Gonzalez stays ahead of Kelce on the all-time regular-season receptions list, which excludes the postseason. His 1,325 catches sit two spots above Kelce, with Jason Witten in between on 1,228.

The receiving-yards crown, by contrast, is no longer in play. The number that defined Gonzalez’s Hall of Fame tight-end career now belongs to the player who spent much of his own career chasing it.
