Rafael Nadal is heading back to the United States, and not to the stadium in Queens where most of his American tennis story was written. The Spaniard will headline a one-night exhibition at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, 28 February 2027, MGM Resorts confirmed in an official announcement on Monday.

Billed as The MGM Slam Presented by Capital One, the night will be Nadal’s first US competitive outing since he stepped away from the professional tour in November 2024.

“I remember how impressive it was to feel the energy of a full arena in a city like Las Vegas,” Nadal said in the announcement.

“After that match in 2024, now I return in a different stage of my life, without the pressure of the tour but with the same passion for this sport.”

From Flushing Meadows to a Vegas showcase

Nadal’s American tennis legacy sits almost entirely in New York. He is a four-time US Open champion, lifting the trophy in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019 as part of the 22 majors that leave him second on the men’s all-time list behind Novak Djokovic.

The Nevada date is nothing like that. It is a staged, one-night affair wedged into the calendar just before the ATP Masters 1000 at Indian Wells, framed by organisers as a chance for Nadal to play “against one of today’s top players” rather than any kind of comeback.

The MGM Slam is heading into its fourth consecutive year as a cornerstone of the spring tennis calendar. The 2026 edition saw eight ATP players, including American No. 1 Taylor Fritz, compete in a 10-point tiebreaker format, with Brazil’s Joao Fonseca beating American Reilly Opelka in the final. Additional players and the format for 2027 are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

A slow return to the match court

Nadal has kept his post-retirement competitive calendar deliberately short. He made a cameo at the Night of Legends exhibition during the Australian Open in February 2026, then played a full show-match at an event marking the 10th anniversary of his academy in Manacor on 3 October 2026. The Spaniard told CNBC in June he had no intention of returning to the professional tour and had turned his focus to the academy.

Vegas is the next entry on that list. Pre-sale tickets for MGM Rewards and AXS members open on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, with public sales starting at 10am local time on Friday, 30 October 2026.
