Four of Europe’s biggest clubs are now circling the same 23-year-old Barcelona midfielder, and the figure being quoted around each of them is the same: €80 million.
Bayern are the latest to join the race, with reports in Germany saying Vincent Kompany personally asked the board to pursue Fermín López as a reinforcement in midfield and attack. The Bavarian club are preparing an offer in that region for the January window, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
Kompany’s push comes from an unusual place. The Bayern head coach collapsed during a training session at the club’s facility on Friday 23 October and spent several days in hospital, where doctors diagnosed a meningeal irritation.
Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed that Kompany was discharged on Wednesday 28 October and is continuing his recovery at home.

“It’s a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday,” Eberl told reporters.
No return date has been set. Assistant Aaron Danks has taken training in Kompany’s absence and was on the bench for Bayern’s 3-1 win at Freiburg at the weekend.
Barcelona hold the leverage
The problem for all four suitors is the same. Fermín López is contracted until June 2031, and Barcelona have shown no appetite to sell a player who came through La Masia and is a regular under Hansi Flick.
The attacking midfielder has produced five goals and four assists in 12 appearances this season, eight of them as a starter, operating in the number ten role alongside Dani Olmo. He has twice said publicly he wants to stay at the club “forever”.

That contract length means €80m is almost certainly a starting figure rather than a finishing one. Any bid at that level would hand Barcelona the stronger negotiating position, and the Catalan club’s willingness to even entertain an offer may depend on the financial pressures they are navigating this season.
Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are the two clubs reportedly furthest down the road in planning a January approach at the €80m mark, with Arsenal also in the mix. Bayern’s entry turns a three-way scramble into a straight auction at the same price point.
Kompany’s push, Eberl’s call
Any move during the mid-season window would need Barcelona to agree a sale, Fermín López to want to leave, and the buying club to meet a figure the Catalans see as acceptable. None of those three conditions is in place today.
The decision at Bayern’s end sits with Eberl and the board while Kompany continues his recovery.

“He was discharged from the hospital today,” Eberl said. “That is the biggest and best news for all of us.”
