Carlos Alcaraz was never fully comfortable at the Erste Bank Open on Thursday. After a one-sided opening set, the world No. 3 was locked in a second-set tiebreak against the big-hitting Nikoloz Basilashvili and had to save four set points before edging through 6-1, 7-6(11), according to the ATP Tour. The breaker finished 13-11.
Alcaraz had struck nine winners in the opener and raced to a double break. Basilashvili found his range in the second, broke back and pushed the top seed to the limit in a tiebreak that neither man could pull clear of. It was Alcaraz’s 60th tour-level quarter-final.
“I would say I played great, overall, from the beginning to the last point. In the first set I was hitting the ball unbelievably and was feeling great on the court,” Alcaraz told the ATP Tour.
He now meets seventh seed Tommy Paul for a place in the semi-finals.

Medvedev saves match point
Daniil Medvedev’s path was more chaotic. The Russian lost the opening set to Cameron Norrie, repeatedly punched the court during the third, and then had to save a match point when Norrie served for victory at 5-3 before clinching a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(1) win, per Tennis Temple. It was his 100th tour-level quarter-final.
Early in the decider, Medvedev looked gone. Norrie broke to lead 3-0 with a crosscourt winner and the Russian bent down to strike the surface, visibly frustrated with what he judged a slow court. He clawed level, denied Norrie on match point in the ninth game, and then took the tiebreak 7-1, closing the match with seven points in a row.
Medvedev will face qualifier Adrian Mannarino in the last eight. The 38-year-old Frenchman had already knocked out eighth seed Jakub Menšík 6-4, 7-5 in the second round, per a Vienna second-round roundup.
A loaded top half
Both wins keep the two biggest names in the draw alive at a tournament that has already lost sixth seed Frances Tiafoe to Lorenzo Musetti and eighth seed Menšík to Mannarino. Alcaraz has yet to look convincing in Vienna but survived; Medvedev has needed three sets in both his matches so far.
