Bruno Fernandes has done what Manchester United captains rarely do in public. He has pointed somewhere other than the squad.

Speaking to The Athletic after Tuesday’s 3-2 Champions League comeback against Roma, the Portugal midfielder said external pressures were weighing on his team-mates and leaving them “mentally crushed by the frustration of not being able to give the club what we believe we’re truly capable of”.

Fernandes did not name owners, executives or recruitment staff. The phrase he did use, “factors outside the dressing room, outside of the players and the backroom staff”, was blunt enough to make clear where he believes the drag on performances lies.

Nine-game drought broken at Old Trafford

The Roma result ended a nine-game winless run in all competitions. Roma had led 2-0 inside the first half through Matías Soulé and a Donyell Malen penalty. Fernandes pulled one back from the spot in the second half, and Matheus Cunha scored twice late on before being sent off for a second yellow.

It was a rare bright evening in a season that has produced only three wins from the club’s opening 14 matches across all competitions. A fortnight earlier, United had been beaten 4-1 at Como, their heaviest defeat of the Champions League group stage.

Balloons at the Stretford End

The mood around the Roma win said more than the scoreline. Supporters handed out around 4,000 green-and-yellow balloons at the Stretford End before kick-off, the familiar colour-scheme of protest against the club’s ownership.

Benched at home to Bournemouth

Fernandes himself was left out of the starting line-up for the home defeat to Bournemouth in late October, a 3-0 loss that was described publicly as a “football decision” rather than a disciplinary one. The captain returned for Como and wore the armband again on Tuesday.

His remarks are the clearest internal acknowledgement so far that the drift at Old Trafford runs beyond selection and tactics. Fernandes added that the frustration hits players differently, with some coping better than others.
