Harry Kane has signed a new contract through June 2029, and the first joke out of the striker’s mouth was aimed at himself.

Asked about his progress with German, the England captain told BBC Sport he is still a beginner three years into life in Bavaria.

“I’m still learning. My children are learning faster than I am, but I have two or three short lessons a week. I’m slowly understanding a bit more, especially when I listen to some of my teammates. But I don’t speak German yet.”

He told BBC Sport he still hopes to eventually take questions from reporters in German by the end of the season, though he admitted it remains a struggle.

A two-year extension, sealed the day before

Kane’s existing deal was due to run until 2027. The new contract adds two years, taking him through 30 June 2029, with the club confirming the agreement on Thursday. The 33-year-old told the press conference the paperwork had been completed a day earlier.

“We signed the contract yesterday, but the decision was made a long time ago,” Kane said, according to The National. “I didn’t have to think about it for long. I’m in the best place I can imagine.”

In the club’s official statement, Kane said he felt at home in Munich and credited head coach Vincent Kompany and the squad around him.

“I love the club, the fans and the city of Munich. We have a fantastic team and, in Vincent Kompany, a fantastic manager. My whole family is very happy here. I was keen to stay.”

156 goals, a Ballon d’Or, and no plans to leave

The extension lands just over a week after Kane was named the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner at the ceremony on 26 October, the first Englishman to take the prize for 25 years. He has scored 156 goals in 161 appearances across all competitions since joining from Tottenham in 2023.

Sky Sports reports his gross salary is set at a minimum of around €25m per year, a figure that would place him among the best-paid players in Europe. Bayern did not disclose any financial details.

Kane will be 35 when the new deal expires, having by then spent six seasons at the Allianz Arena. On the evidence of Thursday’s press conference, the German lessons will still be ongoing.
