Already training in Spain weeks before the move can even be registered, JJ Gabriel sat down with Spanish newspaper Marca and summed up his decision in a single English sentence on the way out of the room.

“My dream is to win the Ballon d’Or,” he told Marca.

Asked earlier in the same interview to choose between Real Madrid and Barcelona, the 16-year-old did not hesitate. “Obviously, Madrid,” he said, his father Joe O’Cearuill, a former Republic of Ireland international, laughing alongside him.

Why United lost him in September

The Marca interview is the first time Gabriel has gone on the record since walking out on Manchester United. He told the club in early September that he wanted to leave and asked for his registration to be cancelled, as UtdReport reported, and has not been seen at Carrington since. The Englishman turned 16 on 6 October, a birthday he spent training privately in Castelldefels outside Barcelona, the Irish Times reported.

The frustration, people around him say, was pace. Teenage peers Shea Lacey and Harry Amass, both 19, got Champions League minutes before him. United countered with a contract extension and the promise of a box in the new stadium. He said no.

Barcelona, Bayern and PSG were all there

Real Madrid were not the only ones on the phone. Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain all pursued the teenager, Yahoo Sports reported. Barcelona went furthest of the alternatives and then stepped back, with the financial package Real Madrid were willing to put on the table reportedly settling the choice.

That package is a three-year deal worth in excess of £850,000 per season, built around the player joining the club’s reserve side, Castilla, under José Mourinho’s first-team watch at the Santiago Bernabéu.

United block him, and threaten to sue

Because his registration at Old Trafford remains active, Gabriel cannot play for Real Madrid’s Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League, the competition where he scored a hat-trick on his debut against Sabah on 10 September. United have blocked him from featuring for a new club while the paperwork sits in limbo, which is likely to push the formal announcement into January 2027.

United are also considering legal action against Real Madrid. The training compensation the club stands to receive once FIFA clears the move would fall between roughly £100,000 and £300,000, a figure Old Trafford views as nowhere near a player it rates in the £100m bracket. The precedent on their minds is Rio Ngumoha, the teenager Liverpool signed from Chelsea in February 2026 for a reported £2.8m compensation package.

For now, Gabriel is in Madrid, posing with a Marca front cover bearing his own face. Real Madrid expect the transfer to go through before his 17th birthday next October.
