Haaland’s historic century prompts warm words from Shearer
Premier League statistics confirm that Haaland hit the 100 goal mark in only 111 appearances. Shearer previously held the fastest record with 124 games. Harry Kane, Sergio Agüero and Thierry Henry complete the top group of fastest scorers, but none kept pace with Haaland’s explosive start since joining City in 2022.
He has now scored against every Premier League opponent he has faced, an uncommon sweep that continues to fuel comparisons with the league’s most dominant scorers.
A message from Shearer and a nod to past advice
Shortly after the match, Haaland posted a photograph of himself holding a shirt printed with “100 PL goals.” Shearer responded in the comments and wrote: “Well done Erling. Your numbers are incredible man. Keep up your great work.”
Haaland later shared an older photo of the two taken during an Amazon Prime Video interview. He added a note thanking Shearer for guidance he offered in 2022, saying the advice had “paid off.”

Shearer had encouraged him to accept the pressure that comes with leading the line for a title contender and to turn that expectation into motivation. That mindset appeared again in Haaland’s interview with Sky Sports.
Haaland on expectations
“I don’t want to say the words, but when you’re a striker for Man City, you should be delivering great numbers and that’s my job,” he told Sky. “People should criticize me if I don’t. That’s normally what people do, so in the end, I should deliver.”
Could Haaland break 260
Speaking to Betfair earlier this year, Shearer said he believes Haaland has the ability to challenge his all time Premier League record of 260 goals. He called the Norwegian “the perfect one” if a person were designing the ideal center forward.
Shearer also noted several variables that could influence the long term chase, such as Haaland’s future in England, eventual managerial changes at Manchester City, and the ongoing Premier League investigation involving the club’s financial conduct. Even with those uncertainties, Shearer said that if Haaland stays in the league for several more seasons, he is “definitely someone who could, and probably will break my record.”

For now, Haaland has already secured a place in history and earned praise from the striker whose numbers once looked untouchable.
