The question drew laughter, but Bruno Fernandes did not bite.
As Manchester United’s players made their way through post-match media duties on Saturday, the captain was asked about a supporter whose ever-growing hairstyle has become an accidental mascot for the club’s recent revival. Fernandes’ response was brief, dry, and entirely on brand.
United’s run gathers momentum
United had just beaten Tottenham Hotspur 2–0 at Old Trafford. Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring before Fernandes added the second, while Spurs defender Cristian Romero was sent off late after a reckless challenge.
It marked a fourth consecutive win under caretaker manager Michael Carrick. Victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and now Tottenham have shifted the mood around a club that has struggled to sustain momentum in recent seasons.

No one has felt that change more personally than Frank Ilett.
Known online as “The United Strand”, Ilett pledged in October 2024 that he would not cut his hair until United won five matches in a row. The streak never arrived under former manager Ruben Amorim, and the challenge quietly rolled on, month after month.
What began as a joke turned into a viral storyline. More than a year later, Ilett’s untrimmed hair has helped him build an audience of over one million Instagram followers and a steady online presence.
Fernandes delivers a deadpan reply
After Saturday’s match, Fernandes was asked in a club media interview whether Ilett could finally start looking for a barber.

“No, no. I need to book for myself,” Fernandes said. “I don't really look at other people if they need to the hairdresser or not. That is not important to me.”
The clip spread quickly on social media, adding another layer to a story that has followed United through their recent run.
One game left
For Ilett, the end may finally be near. He has announced plans to host a special watch-along if United complete the sequence against West Ham on Tuesday.
“Carrick is at the wheel, this hair is going soon,” he said. “West Ham next, four out of five done.”

United travel to the London Stadium for a 20:15 kick-off sitting fourth in the Premier League table, three points behind Aston Villa in third. A fifth straight win would strengthen their Champions League push and finally bring an end to one of the season’s strangest side stories.
