Frank Lampard and Coventry picks up strong defensive midfielder ahead of Premier League entry

Coventry City have moved quickly after sealing promotion, with Frank Onyeka now set to stay at the club on a permanent deal.

The midfielder arrived from Brentford in February to strengthen Lampard’s squad for the run in, and Coventry’s return to the Premier League has now turned that loan into a completed transfer. It gives the club an early piece of certainty before a summer that will demand smart decisions.

The clause was there from the start

According to Brentford Football Club’s February 2 report, Frank Onyeka joins Coventry City, the deal included “an obligation to make the move permanent should the Sky Blues secure promotion to the Premier League this campaign.” The same report said Onyeka joined Brentford from FC Midtjylland in 2021, made 87 appearances for the club in all competitions, spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Augsburg, and had played nine times for Brentford this season before moving to Coventry.

That gives Coventry more than just another body in midfield. Onyeka already knows the pace of English football, has Premier League experience, and arrives without the uncertainty that often comes with summer recruitment. For a promoted side, that matters.

Blackburn changed everything

According to Coventry City’s April 17 match report, Blackburn Rovers 1-1 Coventry City, Bobby Thomas’ late equaliser earned the point that sealed promotion and ended the club’s 25 year wait for a return to the Premier League. The result also triggered the condition in Onyeka’s agreement, turning a short stay into a permanent one.

That makes the timing of the move important. Lampard does not have to wait for the window to open to know one part of his midfield group is settled. Coventry already have a player who has been through the promotion push with them and can walk straight into the next phase.

Portsmouth can cap a huge week

According to the EFL’s official standings page, EFL Sky Bet Championship table, results, fixtures, stats, Coventry were top of the table on 85 points ahead of their April 21 home game against Portsmouth, and a win would secure the Championship title. Promotion was the main job, but first place is still there for the taking.

Coventry have already done the hard part. By getting Onyeka tied down before the summer starts, they have removed one question early. Lampard now knows he will go into Premier League planning with a midfielder he trusts, and the club can focus on where the squad still needs help.
