Szoboszlai sends Liverpool a clear message on his future

Szoboszlai lays out his position

According to Fabrizio Romano on X, Szoboszlai said: “Of course I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands anymore”.

He also said: “I love being here, as I said many times; I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. I'm completely relaxed”.

Those are not the words of a player trying to push his way out. They read more like the words of someone who has already made his preference clear and is now waiting for Liverpool to decide whether to move the process forward.

No progress, but no sign of tension

According to Fabrizio Romano’s follow up post on X, the midfielder also said: “There has been no real progression over new contract”.

He added: “My contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let's see”.

Liverpool still have room to breathe in this situation, because his current deal has time left on it. According to Liverpool FC’s July 2023 announcement by James Carroll, Szoboszlai joined from RB Leipzig on a five year contract, which is why 2028 remains the key date in the background.

Why Liverpool should not leave this hanging

This is not a public row, and it does not read like one. It is a reminder that Liverpool have an important midfielder who wants to stay, but is also being honest that talks are not moving.

According to Patrick Boardman’s Liverpool FC report from January 2026, Arne Slot said Szoboszlai had become more important on and off the pitch and was playing with more confidence. If Liverpool see him as part of the long term core of the squad, his latest comments suggest there is a simple opening here, the player is ready, but the negotiations still need action.
