According to the Liverpool Echo, Alexander Isak offered a tantalising glimpse of his undeniable talent, finding the net for Sweden in their 3-1 defeat to Norway in Oslo. The goal, a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing result for the Swedes, comes as Isak prepares for a pivotal season at Liverpool under a new manager, hoping to put a frustrating, injury-plagued debut campaign behind him.

The friendly match, part of World Cup preparations, saw Isak introduced in the 63rd minute, replacing Gustaf Nilsson. It took the 26-year-old striker just 12 minutes to make his mark. His 75th-minute goal was a moment of individual brilliance, involving a mazy run, a clever step-over, and a shuffle onto his right foot before unleashing a shot. The effort deflected off defender Sondre Klingen Langås, looping over goalkeeper Ørjan Håskjold Nyland to secure Sweden’s only goal.

A season to forget at Anfield

As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Isak arrived at Anfield last summer in a British transfer record deal from Newcastle United, carrying immense expectations. However, his inaugural season was severely blighted by injuries, preventing him from establishing a consistent run in the side. His statistics reflect a campaign of stop-starts:

  • 14 Premier League appearances
  • 3 Premier League goals
  • 1 Premier League assist
  • 1 goal in the Carabao Cup
  • 8 further appearances across all competitions
  • Just 1,032 minutes played in total

His absence was a recurring theme, with former Liverpool manager Arne Slot previously noting Isak’s lack of a pre-season and a subsequent leg injury as reasons for caution in managing his return.

Fitness dilemma and a new era

Despite his impactful cameo against Norway, Isak remains cautious about his immediate fitness. Speaking after the match, he acknowledged the delicate balance between performance and recovery, especially with another fixture looming.

“I don’t know [if I could have played for longer], it’s very possible,” Isak told Fotboll Direkt. “But with another match so close, this was probably best [I came off the bench for 30 minutes].”

When pressed on whether he felt ready to start Sweden’s next game against Greece on Thursday night, Isak added: “It’s hard to say now, it depends on how I feel. If I feel fresh and then I could definitely consider starting.”

This cautious approach is understandable given his recent history. Back at Liverpool, the club is embarking on a new era following the departure of Arne Slot. Andoni Iraola is currently the frontrunner for the managerial position, and he will undoubtedly be keen to assess all options, particularly in the final third. For Isak, the upcoming season presents a crucial opportunity to demonstrate his full capabilities and secure a central role under the new regime, provided he can maintain an injury-free run.
