FIFA has confirmed an all-Argentine officiating team for France’s World Cup quarter-final against Morocco.

The match will be handled by Facundo Tello, one of Argentina’s most experienced referees. He will be joined by assistant referees Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, with Darío Herrera named as fourth official and Cristian Navarro as reserve assistant referee.

According to MyKhel, the appointment means all five listed match officials for the quarter-final come from Argentina.

That detail has caused debate because France and Argentina have developed a strong rivalry in recent years. Argentina beat France in the 2022 World Cup final, while the two nations have also been linked by several tense moments on and off the pitch since then.

Why the appointment has raised eyebrows

There is no suggestion that the officials have done anything wrong.

Still, in a major knockout match, even the nationality of the referee team can become a talking point. Supporters often look for any possible conflict of interest, especially when the teams involved could later meet a country connected to the officials.

France and Argentina are on opposite sides of the World Cup draw, meaning they could only meet in the final. That has made some fans question whether it was wise to appoint an all-Argentine team to a France match at this stage of the tournament.

Described by Yahoo Sports, the decision sparked a quick reaction online, with fans pointing out the unusual nature of the appointment.

Tello leads experienced crew

Tello is not new to major matches.

The Argentine referee has worked at a high international level and is regarded as an experienced official. His assistants, Belatti and Chade, have also been part of major refereeing teams before.

For FIFA, appointing officials from the same country can make practical sense. Referees and assistants often work in established teams, which can help communication and decision-making during fast, high-pressure matches.

The issue is not whether the officials are qualified. The debate is whether the optics are ideal for such a high-profile quarter-final.

France and Morocco prepare for major test

France enter the match as one of the tournament favourites, while Morocco are looking to continue another deep World Cup run.

The two nations also met in the 2022 World Cup semi-final, where France won 2-0 before losing the final to Argentina on penalties.

This time, Morocco will be trying to reverse that result and reach the semi-finals, while France are chasing another step towards a possible final.

With so much at stake, the refereeing team is likely to be watched closely from the opening whistle. For Tello and his crew, the best outcome will be a match remembered for the players rather than the officials.
