As reported by BBC, Max Verstappen’s future at Red Bull Racing has been thrown into further uncertainty after the four-time world champion’s exit clause was officially activated following a frustrating British Grand Prix. The 28-year-old Dutch driver, who has repeatedly voiced concerns over power issues with his car, spun out of contention with five laps remaining at Silverstone, ending his hopes of a third successive podium in 2026.
Verstappen’s contract includes a provision allowing him to mutually terminate his deal if he is not within the top two positions in the Drivers’ Championship by the F1 summer break. The outcome of the British Grand Prix confirmed that securing a top-two spot is now mathematically impossible for Verstappen.
Frustration mounts for the reigning champion
Currently seventh in the Drivers’ Championship, Verstappen’s weekend at Silverstone was marred by recurring power issues during both qualifying and Saturday’s sprint race. His dramatic exit from the Grand Prix, which finished under a safety car, underscored a growing sense of dissatisfaction within the Red Bull camp.
Speaking after the race, Verstappen articulated his safety concerns regarding the car’s reliability. “When it happens one time, that can happen, faults happen,” he stated. “Two times, it’s getting very dangerous for me because you can really hurt yourself at these high-speed corners when it happens.” He added, “I was lucky in Austria, I was lucky here, but that’s why you get really fed up with it.”

The British Grand Prix saw Charles Leclerc secure Ferrari’s second win in three races, with Mercedes’ George Russell finishing second and Lewis Hamilton third. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who won Saturday’s sprint, finished 16th after experiencing car problems, reducing his lead over Russell to 25 points. Verstappen, meanwhile, now trails Antonelli by 103 points and second-place Russell by a further 78 points.
McLaren rumours and the summer break
The activation of Verstappen’s exit clause has intensified speculation about a potential bombshell switch to McLaren at the end of the season, with Oscar Piastri rumoured to move in the opposite direction. However, these rumours have been largely dismissed by those close to the situation.
Journalist Mat Coch addressed the speculation on X, stating, “Lots of rumours about Oscar Piastri leaving McLaren… it all seems to be hot air. Might something happen in the future? Sure. But right now it seems much ado about nothing.” McLaren CEO Zac Brown has also reportedly shut down the possibility of a driver swap involving Piastri and Verstappen.
The F1 summer break, a traditional period for drivers to discuss and decide their futures, is fast approaching. It follows the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix on July 19 and the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 26, before the season resumes with the Dutch Grand Prix on August 23. Last year, after finishing second to Lando Norris in the Drivers’ Championship, Verstappen reportedly considered a move to Mercedes before ultimately pledging his allegiance to Red Bull for another season.
