The Villanova Wildcats and Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s and women’s basketball teams are scheduled to embark on a unique Roman holiday next season, participating in a historic doubleheader in Italy’s capital. The event, officially announced by CNN Sports, is slated for November 1 and will celebrate the shared Catholic missions of the universities while honoring Pope Leo XIV, the first American Pope and a Villanova alumnus.
The doubleheader will feature both men’s and women’s contests. The men’s game is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. ET tip-off and will be broadcast on Fox. Following that, the women’s teams will take the court at noon ET, with coverage on FS1. While the date and broadcast details are firm, the specific venue in Rome where these landmark games will be played has yet to be finalized.
Pope Leo XIV inspires unique basketball event
At the heart of this transatlantic sporting and spiritual endeavor is Pope Leo XIV, whose election occurred in May 2025. Born Robert Prevost in Chicago, he is a distinguished alumnus of Villanova University, having graduated in 1977 with a degree in mathematics. His path led him to join the Order of Saint Augustine, a connection that holds particular significance for Villanova, which, alongside Merrimack, is one of only two Augustinian universities in the United States. Prior to his papacy, Prevost dedicated himself to missionary work in Peru.
The event is designed to be more than just a basketball showcase; it’s a profound recognition of faith and academic heritage. Both the Wildcats and Fighting Irish teams are expected to have a private audience with Pope Leo XIV in advance of their games. Furthermore, the teams are anticipated to participate in a shared Mass within the hallowed halls of St. Peter’s Basilica, adding a deeply spiritual dimension to their visit.
