Oliver Bearman wanted the message plain. If the Haas renewal were his to sign, he said, it would already be on a press release.

Speaking at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez three days before the Mexico City Grand Prix, the 21-year-old told reporters that his destination is settled from his side and only the paperwork is not.

“It’s not really in my hands, I can tell you that. If it was up to me, it would have already been announced a long time ago. But there are a few bigger-picture things that we’re working on.”

He is a Ferrari Academy graduate and remains on the Scuderia’s books while racing in Haas colours, and that overlap is part of what has kept the signatures from landing. In a conversation a week before Mexico, Bearman linked the delay to contractual points being handled between his management and Ferrari rather than to any change of destination.

Several recent reports describe a gap on salary, with Bearman’s camp said to be seeking around €6m and Haas not yet willing to go that high. Both sides have said they want to continue, and talks are expected to carry on through the final rounds of the season.

Câmara signed, Ocon out, Bearman waiting

The other half of the 2027 Haas picture has already been coloured in. The team confirmed Rafael Câmara as Esteban Ocon’s successor on 15 October on a multi-year deal, closing out the Ocon chapter after two seasons at the American outfit.

Câmara, also 21, leads the 2026 Formula 2 championship, won the 2025 Formula 3 title and has already logged mileage for Haas in the team’s 2025 car under the Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) programme.

“I’m really excited to sign such a young, amazing talent like Rafael Câmara,” team principal Ayao Komatsu said when the deal was announced.

That signing framed Bearman’s situation in Mexico City. With Ocon’s seat filled and no other opening, the second car is effectively his to lose, and Komatsu told reporters at the Câmara unveiling that confirmation of Bearman was expected very soon.

Back at the venue of his career best

Bearman sits 13th in this year’s drivers’ standings heading into the weekend, and Mexico City is where he set his career-best Formula 1 finish, a fourth place for Haas.

Lights out at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is on Sunday, 1 November, at 2pm local time.
