Chelsea are reportedly pursuing a surprising move for Brentford and England midfielder Jordan Henderson, with new manager Xabi Alonso’s long-standing admiration for the player believed to be a key factor. The Athletic claims Chelsea are actively working on a deal to sign the 36-year-old on a free transfer.

Henderson, who has one year remaining on his initial two-year contract with Brentford, is expected to be granted a free transfer by the Bees. This potential acquisition marks a notable shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy, which is reportedly focusing on bringing in more experienced players this summer.

The former Liverpool captain’s career has seen several moves in recent years:

• Left Liverpool in 2023 to join Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq.

• Had brief spells at Al Ettifaq and with Ajax.

• Moved back to the Premier League before the start of the 2025/26 season with Brentford.

• Made 32 Premier League appearances for Brentford.

Despite his age, Henderson was part of England’s World Cup squad. He broke his wrist after England’s 3-2 last 16 win over Mexico but was back in the squad for the quarter-final against Norway.

For the way they play it’s very important, the energy he has.”

Alonso had made similar remarks three years earlier in 2016, shortly after Jurgen Klopp’s arrival at Anfield, emphasizing Henderson’s adaptability. “You need to adapt to your team and team-mates, and the opponent as well,” Alonso said. “The more complete you are, the better you will adapt for the long season. Henderson does it very well.” These comments suggest a deep appreciation for Henderson’s leadership, energy, and versatility, qualities that Alonso may now seek to integrate into his Chelsea squad.
