Cristiano Ronaldo’s legendary career has been defined by goals, trophies and countless iconic moments, but one subtle detail has intrigued fans for years: his unwavering preference for wearing long-sleeve shirts.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has consistently opted for long sleeves throughout spells at Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Portugal, even in unusually hot conditions. According to GIVEMESPORT, Ronaldo’s choice has become such a trademark that supporters have long speculated about the reason behind it.
Ronaldo’s long-sleeve habit has puzzled fans
As highlighted by GIVEMESPORT’s Jordan Osborne, Ronaldo has frequently been seen wearing long sleeves regardless of the weather. During his Real Madrid years, he often played in long sleeves despite high temperatures, and he also stuck with the look during Portugal’s Euro 2020 campaign.
One of the few exceptions came against Germany at Euro 2020. With temperatures exceeding 30°C in Munich, Ronaldo started the match in long sleeves before switching to short sleeves after half-time. Portugal went on to lose the game 4-2.

Several theories have emerged
Ronaldo has never publicly explained why he almost always chooses long sleeves, leaving fans to come up with their own theories.
One suggestion is that the habit dates back to his early years in European football, when colder conditions made long sleeves the more comfortable option. Over time, that preference may simply have become routine.
Another popular theory is superstition. Ronaldo wore short sleeves during Portugal’s Euro 2004 campaign and at the 2006 World Cup, tournaments in which his country fell short. However, he famously wore long sleeves throughout Portugal’s triumphant Euro 2016 run, leading some fans to believe he associates the look with good fortune.
It may simply be part of Ronaldo’s image
GIVEMESPORT also points out that Ronaldo’s clothing choice could be linked to his carefully cultivated image. Every aspect of the Portuguese superstar’s appearance has been analysed throughout his career, and the long-sleeve shirt has become one of his most recognisable trademarks.

As Jordan Osborne wrote for GIVEMESPORT: “Whilst Ronaldo has never provided an explanation for his sartorial sporting choice, there are a number of hypothetical reasons that could provide an answer.”
Ultimately, the true reason remains known only to Ronaldo. Whether it’s comfort, superstition, habit or simply personal preference, his signature long-sleeve look has become another iconic part of one of football’s greatest careers.
