A tense Champions League semi-final first leg between Atletico Madrid and Arsenal concluded in a 1-1 draw at the Metropolitano on Wednesday, April 29, but the match was overshadowed by a contentious VAR decision and a heated post-match altercation.

The raucous atmosphere in Madrid witnessed Arsenal, the Premier League leaders, take the lead through a Viktor Gyokeres penalty in the first half. However, La Liga giants Atletico Madrid responded in the 56th minute when Julian Alvarez converted from the spot after Arsenal defender Ben White was penalised for handball. The home side also saw Antoine Griezmann, in what is set to be his final Champions League match in Madrid before joining MLS side Orlando City, strike the crossbar, while Ademola Lookman squandered a close-range opportunity.

Arteta fumes over overturned penalty

The most significant talking point of the evening revolved around a disallowed Arsenal penalty in the second half. Referee Danny Makkelie initially pointed to the spot after David Hancko appeared to foul Eberechi Eze. However, following a VAR review that sent Makkelie to the monitor, the decision was controversially overturned.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was visibly frustrated by the call, believing it was a clear error. “There is no clear and obvious error. And this changes the course of the game. At this level, I’m sorry, but this cannot happen,” Arteta stated after the match. When pressed on whether he had received an explanation for the decision, Arteta added, “No. A very clear explanation of the decision — and what happens for a period of time, when a referee has to watch it 13 times — what’s more clear than that? It’s impossible, and we are all fuming about it.”

Simeone and White’s tunnel confrontation

The drama extended beyond the final whistle. A video posted by Spanish outlet Marca captured a heated exchange between Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and Arsenal defender Ben White near the tunnel. The altercation reportedly stemmed from White appearing to walk over an Atleti crest emblazoned on the floor.

With the tie finely poised at 1-1, all eyes now turn to the second leg, scheduled for next Tuesday, May 5, at the Emirates, where the simmering tensions are sure to add another layer of intrigue to what promises to be a decisive encounter.
