The Villa manager who first worked with Nicolas Jackson at Villarreal is about to get him back. Villa reached a club-to-club agreement with Chelsea for the Senegal international, and Sky Sports reports the transfer could reach £65m in total.

The move is a permanent transfer, not a loan. A medical is expected to follow in the coming days.

The clause that never triggered at Bayern

Jackson, 25, spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich, where an option to buy the forward included in the deal was worth £56.25m. Jackson did not reach the number of appearances required to trigger it, and Chelsea’s plan all summer has been to sell both him and Liam Delap.

Villa needed a No 9 after Watkins

Villa were shopping for a striker after agreeing a £50m sale of Ollie Watkins to Al Hilal, an offer accepted after at least one previous bid had been rejected. Emery worked with Jackson at Villarreal, and the manager’s history with the striker made him a long-standing favourite for the Villa job.

Atletico Madrid pushed but were outbid

Atletico Madrid also chased Jackson and had agreed personal terms with the player, according to Football365, which reported Jackson had reached personal terms with both Villa and Diego Simeone’s side. The Spanish club could not match Villa’s offer, which is understood to be a total package worth more than £60m.
