Fenerbahçe has dismissed head coach Domenico Tedesco with immediate effect, a decision that follows a crushing 3-0 derby defeat against fierce rivals Galatasaray.

The loss effectively ended the club’s Süper Lig title aspirations, prompting a mid-season managerial change less than a year after the German coach took the helm.

The decisive defeat left Fenerbahçe seven points adrift of league leaders Galatasaray with just three games remaining in the season, making the deficit insurmountable.

The result proved to be the final straw for Tedesco, 41, who had been appointed last summer on a two-year deal after previously leading the Belgium national team.

Managerial conflict cited as key factor

While the derby loss was the immediate catalyst, reports suggest deeper issues at play. Turkish outlet Aksam indicated that a “conflict between Coach Tedesco and the club’s management” was a significant background for the dismissal, cited by Starnewskorea.

Fenerbahçe confirmed the departure via an official statement, saying: “In accordance with a decision by the club’s management, we have decided to part ways with current head coach Domenico Tedesco (41), along with the coaching staff. The club expresses its gratitude for their dedication and wishes them success in their future careers.”

The shake-up extends beyond the head coach, with sports director Devin Özək and football coordinator Berke Çelebi also terminated. Senior coach Zeki Murat Gule will now lead the team for the remainder of the season.

Tedesco’s brief tenure saw mixed results. His side secured the Turkish Super Cup in January with a victory over Galatasaray, a high point in his time. However, they also exited the Europa League in the knockout phase playoffs to Nottingham Forest. In the Süper Lig, Fenerbahçe currently sits second with 67 points from 19 wins, 10 draws, and 2 losses, trailing Galatasaray, who lead with 74 points.

Kim Min-jae transfer speculation impacted

The sudden managerial change introduces an unexpected variable into Fenerbahçe’s transfer plans. Ismail Kartal, who has prior experience leading the club, is already being mentioned as a potential next head coach. Crucially, the situation could impact the highly anticipated return of South Korean defender Kim Min-jae.

Speculation had been heating up around the 30-year-old Bayern Munich player, who previously played for Fenerbahçe in 2021 before moving to Napoli and then Bayern in 2023. Kim, reportedly seeking more playing time after becoming a “third option” at Bayern, has attracted active interest from both Juventus and Fenerbahçe. Turkish daily SojuKu reported on April 16 that Fenerbahçe was monitoring Kim and had arranged for his agent to visit Istanbul for negotiations, with Kim’s prior life in the city expected to be a decisive factor.

However, the departure of Tedesco now casts uncertainty over this potential move, as the vision and preferences of the incoming head coach for the squad remain unknown.
