At first, it appeared to be a sudden and unexplained tragedy. A player from German amateur club TuS Rockenberg returned home ill from a trip with his team and died shortly afterwards in hospital.
Investigators now believe he was murdered. A 35-year-old team-mate has been arrested, just two weeks before he was reportedly due to celebrate his wedding.
Fell seriously ill after team trip
Philipp L. travelled to Dresden with his football team in June 2025. After returning home, his condition deteriorated rapidly and severely.
His family called an ambulance, and paramedics attempted to resuscitate him. The 30-year-old died in hospital on 16 June 2025.

According to a joint statement from the Giessen public prosecutor’s office and police in Central Hesse, a post-mortem examination and extensive toxicology tests later established that Philipp L. died from septic multiple organ failure caused by poisoning.
Authorities suspect that the 35-year-old secretly administered the poison to his team-mate.
Investigators point to personal revenge
The case had been under investigation for several months before the arrest. Police interviewed numerous witnesses and examined the relationship between the suspect and the victim.
The 35-year-old was arrested on 1 September 2026 during an operation involving specialist police officers. His home and workplace were searched, while phones, a computer and other potential evidence were seized.

Prosecutors believe the alleged act was motivated by personal revenge. They have refused to disclose the type of poison or how it was administered, arguing that such details amount to information only the perpetrator would know.
“Murders involving poison are very rare, which makes this an extraordinary case,” senior prosecutor Thomas Hauburger told Hessenschau.
Jealousy claims remain unconfirmed
The precise motive remains unclear. Hessenschau has reported that jealousy may have played a role, while Digi24 cites local rumours suggesting the two players had fallen out over a woman.
That part of the story has not been confirmed by investigators. The public prosecutor’s office has officially described the suspected motive only as personal revenge.

Detained before wedding celebration
According to RTL, the suspect had been due to hold a large wedding celebration two weeks after his arrest. Instead, he appeared before a judge and was remanded in custody.
He has declined to comment on the allegations. The investigation is continuing, with further witnesses expected to be questioned and the seized devices still being examined.
If the case leads to a murder charge and conviction, the 35-year-old could face life imprisonment, according to the prosecutor. He has not been convicted and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
TuS Rockenberg has described the situation as extremely distressing. The club said nobody could comprehend the latest devastating blow and expressed hope that investigators would fully establish what happened.
