Manchester United’s head coach is being priced into the market. Four matches into the Premier League season, Betfair has cut Michael Carrick’s odds of being the next top-flight boss dismissed from 17/2 to 11/2, placing him third in the queue behind Alvaro Arbeloa and Frank Lampard, just ahead of Roberto De Zerbi.

Gary Neville, working Sunday’s 1-0 derby defeat at Old Trafford for Sky Sports, refused to let the disputed winning goal shield the performance.

“Michael Carrick can be angry about the goal but he should also be angry about the performance,” Neville told viewers.

“You’re losing a derby, it’s a shocking day anyway.”

“Next Sunday against Fulham, that becomes a real pressure game now because obviously Fulham have not started the season that well.”

Neville also raised something no manager wants said about his squad four rounds into a campaign.

“It is early but there are some concerning signs. They’re not playing well in matches and they’re also struggling in matches.”

The goal that shouldn’t have counted

Erling Haaland scored the winner in the 60th minute. Phil Foden had already been sent off in the first half for a two-footed challenge on Bruno Fernandes, and Manchester City closed the game out with ten men.

By Monday evening, Pro Ref had admitted the goal was an error.

“On this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review,” the Premier League referees’ body said, referring to Manchester City’s Enzo Fernández, who was in an offside position on the same attack.

Pro Ref said contact had been made with Manchester United to acknowledge “what we deem is an error of judgement,” and confirmed that a formal review would take place. United defender Lisandro Martínez was less measured.

“We have to go home with this injustice,” Martínez said.

INEOS still backing Carrick

The hierarchy at Old Trafford has not moved. Fabrizio Romano reported that the club still trusts Carrick to steady the season.

“Man Utd absolutely remain convinced that the future will be bright under Michael Carrick,” Romano wrote.

United sit on four points from four games, matching, per Sky Sports, the club’s worst Premier League start. They travel to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday, September 20.
